Good short piece; I like the core premise: a/the story. In my experience, the challenge for strategy “in the building” were the stories created by Senior Mil and/or US civilian leadership (typically NSC). Here, it was the art of tact: telling a leader he/she has a story that is unactionable using Mil resources and operational concepts overlaid upon risk and the spectrum of acceptable to unacceptable outcomes & consequences. Learning to give negative strategy feedback—it’s as crucial as the idea(s) within.
